Washing your face seems simple… but it’s one of the most common reasons why your skin stays dry, irritated or flaky.

I learned this the hard way.

For a long time, I struggled with dry, flaky skin around my nose and eyebrows. I tried different creams, oils, and routines… but nothing really worked.

The problem wasn’t what I was putting on my skin. It was how I was washing it.

Common Mistakes That Damage Your Skin

Before we talk about what to do, here’s what might be making your skin worse:

  • Washing your face with hot water

  • Using harsh products

  • Cleansing too often (more than 2 times a day ) - I personally cleanse once a day and it works for me

  • Not moisturising immediately after

All of these can strip your skin barrier — which leads to dryness, irritation and flaking.



How to Wash Your Face the Right Way


1. Use lukewarm water

Hot water feels nice, but it dries out your skin fast. Always go for lukewarm.

2. Choose a gentle cleanser

This made the biggest difference for me.

Look for:

  • “hydrating”

  • “for sensitive skin”

  • “no alcohol”

I personally started using a much gentler cleanser and noticed my skin wasn’t tight anymore after washing. Using a gentle cleanser in the UK is especially important if you have dry or sensitive skin.


3. Don’t over-cleanse

Once in the morning and once in the evening is enough.

More than that = irritation.

4. Pat your skin dry (don’t rub)

Rubbing your face with a towel can make dryness worse.

5. Moisturise immediately

This is KEY.

Apply your moisturiser within 1 minute after washing — this helps lock in hydration.

Look for ones with ceramides. They help to repair your skin's barrier. Some moisturizers might not be enough. You will see a massive change after using it.


What Changed for Me

Once I simplified my routine and stopped over-cleansing, my skin started to calm down.

The dryness around my nose and eyebrows improved a lot — not overnight, but within a few days I saw a difference.

Sometimes less really is more.
